2021 PATIENT project
KERATOCONUS FOUNDATION AND SIBAYA COMMUNITY TRUST PARTNERSHIP

PARTNERSHIP WITH THE SIBAYA COMMUNITY TRUST
The KFSA 2021 partnership with the Sibaya Community Trust has been a great success, exceeding all programme expectations. The generous donation from the Sibaya Community Trust has enabled patients at the McCords Provincial Eye Hospital to receive treatment for their keratoconus eye disease at the pubic sector facility. Through this NPO-public-private partnership initiative, the quality of lives of many young people have forever been positively changed.
Thus far, 12 patients had corneal transplants, performed by Dr Lourens Coetzee from ENVISION CENTRE FOR SIGHT and the team of young ophthalmologists that he has been training in this surgical procedure. Other treatments include 16 Corneal Cross Linking procedures, 1 INTACS and 30 patients fitted with contact lenses.
To build clinical capacity in keratoconus management, over 30 optometrists/ophthalmologists have received in-person training at McCords Hospital.
