HOW DOES IT AFFECT THE PATIENT ?

The disease generally starts whilst the child is still at school and continues with the steepening and thinning of the cornea way into adulthood.

The resultant distorted, blurred vision severely hampers daily living, education and employment opportunities of these keratoconic patients.

Some of the other symptoms are:

  • Haloes around lights, causing difficulty with night driving
  • Photophobia, which is extreme sensitivity to light
  • Headaches
  • Blurred vision with spectacles which cannot correct the condition as it progresses beyond early stages
